Why Pilates Works For Back Pain

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek out Pilates. We find that working with a well-trained instructor the Pilates method can be tailored to help people move carefully around triggers of back pain, be used to identify areas of poor alignment or weakness, and build a practice that is safe and effective for short and long term back-health.

We strongly recommend consulting with your doctor and/or physical therapist before beginning any new movement practice especially if you have a diagnosed condition or are experiencing significant pain.

The focus that classical Pilates brings to building deep core strength, improving body balance, alignment and awareness all can significantly help clients get out of pain from a  variety of back pain issues.

What a Session Looks Like (For Someone With Back Pain)

Private Sessions Are the Right Starting Point

Back pain is never one-size-fits-all. The cause, the history, and what the body needs to recover is different for every person, which is exactly why dropping into a group class is not the best first step if back pain is what brought you here.

In a private pilates session in Seattle, your instructor takes the time to understand your specific situation before you do a single exercise. They assess how you move, where your body may be holding tension, and what your body needs to build strength safely. Every exercise in every session is chosen with your back in mind, and adjusted in real time based on how your body responds.
